What is shift differential?

Shift differential is additional pay — a flat amount or a percentage of the base rate — given to employees for working less-desirable hours such as nights, weekends, or holidays.

Shift differential is an incentive: because few people want the overnight or holiday shift, employers add a premium on top of the regular hourly rate to make those shifts easier to fill and fairer to the people who take them.

It can be a flat add-on (for example, +$2.00/hour for any shift starting after 10 p.m.) or a percentage (for example, +10% for weekend shifts). It is separate from overtime — an employee can earn both — and the differential is generally included in the “regular rate” when overtime is calculated.

In restaurants, differentials show up most often for late-night close-down crews, holidays, and hard-to-staff weekend dinner services.

Restaurant example

A line cook earns $18/hour. The restaurant pays a $2.50/hour night differential for shifts that run past midnight. On a shift from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., the hours after midnight are paid at $20.50/hour.

Frequently asked questions

How is shift differential calculated?

It is either a flat dollar amount added per hour (e.g. +$2/hour for nights) or a percentage of the base rate (e.g. +10% for weekends). The employer sets the policy; there is no single legal formula.

Is shift differential required by law?

No, federal law does not require shift differential — it is a voluntary incentive set by the employer. However, when it is paid, it generally must be included in the regular rate used to calculate overtime.
